Abstract
1470986 Oil recovery MARATHON OIL CO 29 July 1974 [17 Aug 1973 29 Aug 1973] 33330/74 Heading E1F The mobility of fluids in a porous formation is controlled by introducing therein an aqueous solution containing a salt-sensitive polymer or a biopolymer and divalent and/or trivalent cations, the cations being effective, in the case of a salt-sensitive polymer solution, to increase the permeability of the formation with respect thereto, and, in the case of a biopolymer solution, to decrease the permeability of the formation with respect thereto. The cations may be introduced into the solution either before or after injection. The saltsensitive polymer may be a partially hydrolysed, high molecular weight polyacrylamide and the biopolymer may be a polysaccharide. The cations are preferably Ca<SP>++</SP> and/or Mg<SP>++</SP>, although examples of other cations are described, in a concentration, in the case of a salt-sensitive polymer solution, in the range of from 10-15,000 mg/l, and, in the case of a biopolymer solution, in the range of from 50-20,000 mg/l.
