Abstract

1470762 Ball and socket joints M LAURENCE 7 June 1974 [7 March 1973] 11203/73 Heading E2F [Also in Division A5] A prosthetic shoulder joint comprising a scapula cup 5 having an internal part-spherical bearing surface 6, and a humeral element 10 having a part spherical head 11, adapted to locate within the cup, and a substantially straight shank 12 for connection to the humerus, the cup being dimensioned for connection to the glenoid 1, acromion 2 and the coracoid process of the scapula, the axis 16 of the shank 12 passing through the head 11 but being offset from the centre of rotation 17. The cup is of a resilient synthetic plastics so that the head 11 has to be sprung into place, with its internal surface greater than a hemisphere. The outer surface of the cup is part spherical and provided with parallel circular grooves 7 between which are notches 8, aiding location of the cup in the glenoid cavity with cement. A stainless steel wire ring 9 is provided in one groove to assist in radiographic examination. The shank 12 has three shallow scallops 15 to facilitate its fixation with cement.
