Abstract

1470724 Synthesis gas production TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 26 Aug 1975 [26 Sept 1974] 35158/75 Heading C5E A method for the continuous manufacture of a gas containing principally CO and H 2 comprises introducing, into an unpacked free flow synthesis gas generator 21, a first slurry 30 of particulate carbonaceous fuel in a liquid hydrocarbon fuel, a second slurry 1 of particulate carbonaceous fuel and water, and a stream 40 of free-oxygen-containing gas interposed between the streams of the first and second slurries so that the three streams may be intermixed and produce an atomized dispersion which is caused to react at a temperature of 1500- 3500‹F. to produce a gaseous effluent stream 42; in the atomized dispersion, the atomic ratio of oxygen to carbon in the total fuel is 0À6-1À6, the weight ratio of H 2 O to fuel is 0À1-1À3, and the weight ratio of total solid carbonaceous fuel to liquid hydrocarbon fuel is 0À8-12, and the first and second slurries are introduced into the gas generator at a velocity of 1-500 feet per second. The effluent stream 42 may be split into a first stream 43 which is cooled in a waste heat boiler 44, scrubbed with oil at 56 and then with water at 69 to give a desired product gas stream 76 containing principally H 2 and CO containing less than 10 mole per cent H 2 O. The particulate carbon/oil dispersion obtained in knockout pot 61 following scrubber 56 is in part recycled to the gas generator 21 via line 33 and a grinding system 31 which grinds carbonaceous fuel 32, and in part fed back into the scrubber 56. A second stream 47 of the effluent 42 from the generator 21 is passed through a water quench tank 48 from which a gas stream 49 containing CO and H 2 , saturated with water, is produced. The separated dispersion 79 of solids and water is mixed with the dispersion 77 obtained from a water knockout pot 75 following the water scrubber 69 for the first stream, and is treated in a settling tank 80, froth flotation zone 85 and then passed to mixing tank 24, which is fed with ground coal 25 to give a slurry which provides the feed 1 to the gas generator. The first and second slurries and the oxygen-containing gas may be introduced into the gas generator using a multiple annulus burner 4 as illustrated in Fig. 2. The liquid hydrocarbon slurry is fed in through central conduit 7, oxygen through intermediate conduit 5, and water slurry through conduit 2. Numerous solid carbonaceous fuels and liquid hydrocarbons which may be used in the process are mentioned.
