Abstract
1470354 Supporting magnetic tape in rotating head apparatus INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 19 May 1975 [15 July 1974] 21138/75 Heading G5R A magnetic tape 13 is supported across the path of a rotating, flying magnetic head, mounted on a rotor 11, by tape support means 14, 15 one on either side of rotor 11, the rotor 11 having an annular outer surface 25 whose outer diameter extends outwardly beyond both supports 14, 15 and which is effective to support the tape 13 with a gas bearing along the rotor path to thereby produce localized tape deflection coincident with this path, and the magnetic head extending radially outwardly beyond the outer diameter of the annular surface 25 of the rotor 11 to thereby produce a moving tent 40 or 41 of localized tape deflection coincident with the head. In a helical tape wrap apparatus, which may be of the type shown in Specifications 1,420,724 and 1,457,355, the rotor 11 carries a read head (32) and a write head (33), Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), which may be of the type shown in Specifications 1,436,396 and 1,470,353. Rotor 11 is flanked by stationary cylindrical mandrels 14, 15, which may be as disclosed in Specification 1,456,166, and support the tape 13 with an air bearing providing a spacing 21 of 0À002 inch. The annular surface 25 of rotor 11 has an arcuate contour in cross-section in a plane containing the rotor axis with a radius of curvature of about 10 inches, so that the peak of the contour 25 projects out beyond surfaces 23, 24 of mandrels 14, 15 whereas the edges (19A), Fig. 3 (not shown), of contour 25 may be level with or below surfaces 23, 24, e.g. mandrels 14, 15 are of 3À5 inch diameter and rotor 11 is of diameter 3À499 inches at edges (19A) and has a maximum diameter of 3À505 inches. Rotation of rotor 11 produces a hydrodynamic gas bearing for tape 13 and in addition rotor 11 may be pressurized to define a hydrostatic air bearing for tape 13, whereby the spacing 22 may be 0À0003 to 0À002 inch at the maximum diameter of rotor 11 and in regions away from the heads (32), (33) which protrude about 0À004 inch above such maximum diameter and produce localized moving tents 40, 41 in the tape 13 whereat the tape flies above the heads with a spacing of 5 to 20 microinches. An alternative contour for rotor 11 is disclosed with respect to Fig. 3a (not shown), unsuitable contours being disclosed with respect to Figs. 3b, 3c (not shown).
