Abstract

1470302 Butane diol; multistage preparation GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 15 March 1974 [30 May 1973] 11659/74 Heading C2C Butane diols are made by (a) reacting propylene, oxygen and a C 1-6 alkanoic acid at an elevated temperature in the presence of a catalyst selected from Pt, Ir, Os, Pd, Rh or Ru or its salts or oxides; (b) hydroformylating the resulting allyl alkanoate in the presence of a carbonyl of Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir or Pt or their mixture or a mixture of the carbonyls and the free metals, at elevated temperature and pressure; (c) de-esterifying the resulting diol carboxylate esters to produce the desired butane diols and a carboxylic acid; and (d) recycling the carboxylic acid for use in step (a).
