Abstract
1470017 Sanding DEXTER & CO (HIGH WYCOMBE) Ltd 16 Feb 1976 [14 Feb 1975] 6374/75 Heading B3D [Also in Division B5] A sawing machine, e.g. a band saw 11, comprises two reciprocable tables 15, 16 each to support and to advance workpieces 17, 18 past a saw 14 common to both tables to cut and also to retract workpieces after having been cut, the tables being driven out of phase so that as one table is advanced the other is retracted. The two tables 15, 16 are mounted on guide rails 35, 36, one on each side of the saw 14, and provided with a driving mechanism which retracts one table 16 while the other table 15 advances the workpieces 18 past the saw 19 (see Fig. 4). The guide rails 35, 36 are connected by a cross member 39 which slides on cross rails 40 perpendicular to the guide rails 35, 36 (arrow 37, 38 in Fig. 4). After each cutting stroke the rails 35, 36, and with them the tables 15, 16 and the workpieces 17, 18, can be moved transversely to a position such that the workpieces just retracted will extend across the line of sawing by an amount equal to the width of the workpiece to be sawn off while the workpiece just having been sawn is spaced from the saw band 14. Furthermore an angle bracket or frame 22 advances the workpieces 17, 18 with respect to the table 15, 16 transversely to the rails 35, 36. Transversely movable tools, such as sanding bands 42, 43 or groove cutting devices may be mounted to move with the tables in order to machine the workpieces additionally during the retraction phase. There may be a pair of centres on each table to support the workpieces at their ends and to rotate them. The driving centre may have indexing means so that a piece of round timber may be shaped as desired, e.g. square, hexagonal &c. Each table 15, 16 may have an upper workpiece supporting part 23 which is tiltable by an hydraulic or pneumatic actuator 24 during alternate cutting strokes to effect the cutting of angled strips from a workpiece. All the movements may be automatically controlled.
