Abstract

1470010 Forming optical fibres STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 18 July 1974 31849/74 Heading C1M In producing an optical fibre, the fibre is caused to flow from the outlet 18 of a double bushing whose inner bushing 10 and outer bushing 12 contain melts of core glass 11 and cladding glass 13 respectively, the melts being exposed to a first vacuum in chamber 16, the fibre passing into a second, less highly evacuated, chamber 17 before passing through outlet 19. The first chamber 16 may be at a pressure of about 10<SP>-4</SP> Torr, and the second chamber 17 at about 1 Torr. The inner and outer bushings 10, 12 may be of silica. Outlet 19 may comprise an iris diaphragm. The apparatus may comprise a radiant heater 14 and reflector 15, and a further radiant heater 20 focused on a point just above outlet 18.
