Abstract

1469753 Tunnelling machines SIR ROBERT McALPINE & SONS Ltd and J BLAND 11 April 1974 [30 April 1973] 20486/73 Heading E1F A tunnelling machine having a cutting head 11 mounted on a cylindrical shield 10 is guided by means of a steering arm 20 connected between the shield and a sledge 19 slidable behind the shield, the angle between the arm and the longitudinal axis of the shield being adjustable to pivot or rock the shield about a sole plate 15 on the underside thereof. The steering arm is pivotally attached to the shield at 21 and two hydraulic jacks 23, symmetrically disposed about the vertical, act between the shield and steering arm to cause the alteration of the angle. The steering arm also provides a support for a spoil removal conveyer 27 and a segment erector 34.
