Abstract

1468775 Pulp refiners BOLTON-EMERSON Inc 27 Aug 1975 35309/75 Heading B2A A pulp refiner particularly for leather hemp flax and rags and tough rejects comprises a bladed rotor 37 Fig. 1 a bladed stator 36 with a frusto-conical interface 38, 39 means to adjust the clearance so that the rotor and stator operate with metal-to-metal contact and recirculating means to recycle material in a vertical flow until refined. Freeness of the pulp is determined by a sensor 55 and when sufficient the pulp is dumped after the rotor has been backed off. The power applied to the rotor is increased during refining as the gap is reduced, a limit switch 58 signalling the 'fully retracted position of the rotor. The rotor is driven by a motor 65 of e.g. 125 h.p. Extra power is supplied to supplement the motor 65 by a motor 66, when the clearance is reduced by a pneumatic actuator 52. Alternatively a manually-operated threaded thrust screw can be used to set the gap. The rotor may include two or more lobes 73..75 Fig. 4 which balance deflection forces in operation. The blades of rotor and stator are readily replaceable.
