Abstract

146,786. O'Leary, M. V. Dec. 30, 1918. Reciprocating and oscillating machines; electromagnets.-To prevent sparking at the contacts 15, 16 of a make-and-break switch included in the circuit of an electro-magnetic coil 10, the coil is built up of two insulated conductors comprising several turns of flat copper strips A, B separated by paper C and wound around the laminated core 9 so that the normal current flow through both conductors is in the same direction about the axis of the core; the ends of the strips are connected to a source of current, such as a battery D, and to the switch contacts as shown. It is stated that this consruction has the same effect as a condenser bridged across the contacts. The coil is particularly designed for use in a toy electric motor, the frame of which includes slotted side plates between which the electro-magnet is fixed by bolts 8. A vibrating armature 14 is supported on the magnet by a flat spring 12 and its vibratory motion is converted into rotary movement of a driving drum G by means of a flexible band 21 wound around the drum; one end' of the band is connected to the armature 14 and the other end to a spring 22.
