Abstract

Boring bar machines. - Apparatus for machining the bores of cylinder castings &c. comprises a tube 3 supported in ball bearings at each end with a centring- flange 20 at its lower end and a tool-holder 14 having a sliding but non - rotatable connexion to the tube. The tool-holder carries a roughing or finishing tool or both, and also automatically disengageable nut portions 15, 15<a> adapted to cause feeding of the tool-holder by engagement with a screwed central rod 9, rotated at a slower speed than the tube through gearing 24, 10, 23, the tube being rotated from a shaft supported in a bearing 7 in a housing 11 which fits over the securing-plate 12 of the apparatus. The feed is stopped automatically by the other ends of the nut levers 15 entering a groove in the feed rod.
