Abstract

1466705 Surface connector AMP Inc 21 Feb 1974 [7 March 1973] 7861/74 Heading H2E A connector assembly comprises an insulating housing 34 receiving a forked contact receptacle 10, having a post portion 12 carrying two spring arms 22, 24 prestressed apart with the remote edge of each arm carrying a lug 54, inserted arms-first into a cavity 36 in the housing to face an opening through which a mating pin can be inserted: cam surfaces 38 within the cavity act on the lugs 54 to spring the arms further apart and provide a contact retaining shoulders 52 behind which the lugs may latch. The housing, which may have multiple cavities, can engage 16 receptacles when their posts 12 are mounted in holes 14 in a printed circuit or other board 20. The receptacles may be formed on a strip (Fig. 2, not shown) and gang-inserted into the board. Only some of the cavities (50, Fig. 4, not shown) need carry latching shoulders; in these the pin-receiving openings may be partially cut back to allow entry of a releasing tool.
