Abstract
1466600 Coatings EASTMAN KODAK CO 22 Aug 1974 36983/74 Addition to 1181508 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions C3 and G2] Supports of particular use, in photography comprise a coating comprising copolymer containing (A) at least 50% by weight of units of the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is H or methyl and R<SP>2</SP> is alkyl, (B) 3-30% by weight of units of the formula wherein R<SP>3</SP> is H or methyl and M is a cation (e.g. H, NH 4 , alkali metal or organic ammonium), and (c) 2-20% by weight of units of the formula wherein either R<SP>4</SP> is H or alkyl and R<SP>5</SP> is R<SP>6</SP> being alkylene and X being aliphatic acyl or -CN, or R<SP>4</SP> is R<SP>7</SP> being alkylene containing at least two carbon atoms in the alkylene chain and X is as previously defined, and R<SP>5</SP> is alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl, said copolymer containing at least 0.1% by weight of active methylene groups (i.e. methylene groups bonded directly to two electron-withdrawing groups, e.g. carboxyl groups). The layers may also include a hydrophilic colloid binder, e.g. gelatin, and can be applied to a support from an aqueous dispersion or latex of the copolymer, optionally also containing the binder. The copolymer layer can, if desired, be hardened by treatment with such compounds as formaldehyde, mucochloric acid, an aziridine, a vinyl sulphonyl compound, or a hardener derived from dioxane, an oxy-polysaccharide or an oxy plant gum; such hardener can be incorporated in the copolymer dispersion (latex). An Example illustrates the preparation and application of a copolymer of n-butyl acrylate, 2-acryloylamino-2, 2-dimethylethane-1-sulphonic acid and 2-acetoacetoxy ethyl methacrylate.
