Abstract
1466458 Pulleys BORG-WARNER CORP 15 Nov 1974 [17 Dec 1973] 49572/74 Heading F2Q [Also in Division B3] A method of making a rotary member having an annular web with an integral peripheral groove comprises confining an inner portion of a circular blank between a pair of dies 112, 113 with an annular portion of the blank projecting beyond the dies, rotating the blank with its periphery in contact with at least one forming roller 122, 123 and permitting the blank to rotate relatively to the dies while feeding the roller or rollers towards the axis of rotation of the blank so as to form a groove having a pair of diverging walls by plastic flow of the blank material. The tubular portion 38 is formed in a series of conventional drawing stages in a flat metal blank and its end (37) is cut off, Figs. 1-7 (not shown). An annular portion 39 of the blank Fig. 9, is held between die members 41, 42 and a die member 43, Fig. 8 (not shown), is advanced through a cavity 48 in the die member 42 and into the tubular portion 38 of the blank. The die member 43 compresses the portion 38 to form it into the hub and thicken it and at the same time form a protuberant ridge portion 67, Fig. 9. The formed blank Fig. 9 is placed on an anvil die 113 and an anvil die 112 is lowered on to it, both dies being driven rotationally. Powered rollers 122, 123 are moved to engage the periphery of the blank and are rotated at a speed at which their peripheral velocity matches that of the blank. The relatively broad nose portion 143 of the roller 122 serves mainly to thicken the material of the blank while the relatively narrow nose portion 141 of the roller 123 shapes a peripheral groove in the blank. All surfaces of the dies engaging the blank are lubricated. Further shaping of the groove is performed by clamping the blank between the rotary die members (151), (152), Fig. 12 (not shown), and a pair of rollers (161), (162) identical in profile to the roller 123 engage in the groove. The pulley is brought to its final shape as shown in Fig. 15 by axially movable dies 178, 179, Fig. 14, working in co-operation with dies 173, 174.
