Abstract
146,597. Harter, G. April 7, 1919. Hulls; plating; decks.-Relates to the construction and form of ships, the plating of which consists of plates bent in one direction only without any twist. All the plates have only a single curvature and are bent in a direction lengthways of the ship perpendicular to any transverse plane at right-angles to the vertical longitudinal centre plane. A transverse section at any point is thus composed of straight lines except for rounded or chamfered chines. The side and bottom skin of the vessel comprises not less than three surfaces on either side of the longitudinal centre plane. The surfaces are such that any lines drawn on the surface transversely are parallel to each other in addition to being straight. The chines connecting the surfaces consist of plates formed to a uniform transverse section throughout their length. Decks are similarly formed of three or more surfaces, straight in transverse section. Figs. 5 and 6 show the half transverse sections of bow and stern respectively, the vessels being generally built with parallel midships portions. A wider deck at the bow and a transom at the stern is formed by providing an additional surface similar to one of the surfaces forming the main body of the hull. The chine may be variously constructed of bent or angularly-shaped pieces inserted between the edges of adjacent surfaces. A complete example of the lines of a ship embodying the features described is given in the drawings accompanying the Specification.
