Abstract
1465372 Coating glass articles ANCHOR HOCKING CORP 13 May 1974 [14 May 1973] 21159/74 Heading C1M A surface portion of a glass article (e.g. a bottle) is coated by:- (a) preparing an enamel composition in dry powder from which comprises a vitreous enamel frit (whose softening point is below that of the glass) and a refractory inorganic component (e.g. TiO 2 pigment); (b) preheating the glass article to a temperature at which it is electrically conductive, but which is insufficient for the frit to fuse to the glass; (c) applying the enamel composition to the article by an electrostatic dry powder spray process so that the powder adheres to the glass by electrostatic attraction and not by thermal fusion; and (d) firing the coated article at a temperature sufficient to fuse the particles of the enamel composition to the glass surface as discrete droplets, but insufficient to allow the particles to coalesce to form a smooth film. The method may be used to simulate a sandblasted appearance (using a peak firing temperature of 1000‹-1100‹ F.) or an acid-etched appearance (peak firing temp. at 1125‹-1200‹ F.). Preferably the peak firing temperature is 50‹-300‹ F. above the softening point of the frit. The glass article may be preheated to 150‹-450‹ F. The enamel composition may be applied in a pattern to the glass article, and may be applied in an amount of 0À0002-0À0006 oz./in<SP>2</SP>. The enamel composition preferably comprises 80-99À5% by weight frit and 0À5-20% pigment, and preferably the composition is kept substantially at room temperature until it contacts the glass. A suitable lead borosilicate vitreous enamel frit comprises, in weight per cent: SiO 2 25-30, B 2 O 3 5-10, Na 2 O 3-7, PbO 45-55, ZrSiO 4 5-10, TiO 2 2-5 and Al 2 O 3 2-5.
