Abstract
1465286 Masked polyisocyanates; polyurethane powder coatings UCB 23 Sept 1975 [23 Sept 1974] 41242/74 Heading C3R Masked polyisocyanates having a glass transition temperature of from 30‹ to 105‹ C. and a softening temperature of from 80‹ to 150‹ C. and, which are subsequently mixed with hydroxyl-containing polymers to produce polyurethane powder coatings, are prepared by first reacting isophorone diisocyanate with sufficient of #-caprolactam to mask the most reactive NCO group and then reacting the resultant partly masked isocyanate with a polyhydroxylated compound which is a 20/80 to 60/40 diol/ triol mixture, expressed as the equivalent weight of hydroxyl. It is preferred to use 0À7 to 1À4 moles of caprolactam per mole of diisocyanate and subsequently 1 mole of the polyhydroxylated compound. Suitable diols are ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, propylene glycol and neopentyl glycol and suitable triols are trimethylolethane and trimethylolpropane. The hydroxyl-containing polymers used to prepare the powder coatings are preferably polyester polyols or acrylic polymers containing hydroxyl groups. Metal substrates may be coated with the powder coatings by electrostatic spraying techniques, followed by storing at a temperature of from 150‹ to 240‹ C.
