Abstract
1464994 Poly(vinylidene fluoride)/methylmethacrylate copolymer compositions RHONEPOULENC-TEXTILE 4 June 1974 [6 June 1973] 24674/74 Heading C3P Yarns, fibres and films are made from a cornposition comprising poly(vinylidene fluoride) and a copolymer which contains at least 60% by weight of methylmethacrylate and 5 to 40% by weight of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer copolymerizable therewith, or an alkali metal salt of such acid or acids, said mixture containing at least 40 milliequivalents of an acid per kilogram of polymer mixture and at least 80% by weight of the vinylidene fluoride homopolymer, based on the total weight of the polymer mixture. The acid may be carboxylic or sulphonic with acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, 2-sulphoethyl methacrylate and 2-acrylamino-2- methyl-propane sulphonic acid being preferred. The poly(vinylidene fluoride) preferably has a melt flow index (the amount of polymer extruded at 250 C. in 1 minute through a 2 mm. nozzle at 10 kg./sq. cm.) of at least 10 at 250 C. The fibres and yarns are prepared by extruding the polymer composition from a solution in an aprotic polar organic solvent as filaments and setting the filaments by a wet, dry or semi-melt method. Films are obtained by forming the same solution into a film and setting by the same methods. The yarns, fibres or films may then be stretched in one or more stages, before or after washing and subsequently heat-treated. The products have good affinity for plastosoluble and cationic dyes. In the Examples, poly(vinylidene fluoride) and copolymers of methylmethacrylate with (1) and (5) 2-acrylamido-2-methyl propane sulphonic acid, (2) and (4) 2-sulphoethyl methacrylate; (3) methacrylic acid, were dissolved in dimethylformaldehyde, extruded into filaments and dyed.
