1464721 Lubricants ETHYL COOPER Ltd 14 March 1974 [27 Feb 1973] 9542/73 Heading C5F [Also in Division C3] Lubricating oil compositions comprise as dispersants alkylphenoxy-substituted aliphatic carboxylic acid esters which are condensation products of alkyl-substituted phenols wherein the alkyl substituents contain at least 50 carbon atoms and halogen-substituted aliphatic carboxylic acid esters. Preferred alkyl substituents are derived from olefin polymers. The condensation products may be further reacted with amines to form amides, or may be subjected to over-basing by suspending a metal compound therein on blowing with carbon dioxide. Examples describe products obtained by reacting polyisobutenyl phenol with (1, 3 and 9) nbutyl chloroacetate, (5) ethyl chloroacetate, (6) n-hexyl chloroacetate, (7) ethyl bromoacetate, (8) ethyl 2-bromobutyrate, (10) n-butyldichloroacetate, (11) methoxyethoxyethyl chloroacetate and (12) ethyl 3-bromopropionate; polypropenyl phenol with (2) n-butyl chloroacetate and polyisobutenyl o-methyl phenol with n-butyl chloroacetate.
