Abstract
1463711 Cutting by fusion THERMAL DYNAMICS CORP 18 Jan 1974 02450/74 Heading B3V [Also in Division H5] A gas vortex stabilized plasma arc torch has a through bore 11 in which an electrode 20, a gas distributor 16 and a nozzle 12 are biased (by spring 34) into engagement, the nozzle and gas distributor having abutting plane faces in the region of which abutment are channels 17, tangential to a plasma passage 13 through the nozzle 12 and parallel to a plane end face of the electrode, for the introduction of the plasma forming and arc stablizing gas, there being grooves 18 to conduct this gas along the sides of the gas distributor 16. As described the channels 17 are formed in the abutting face of the nozzle (Fig. 2a). The relative sizes of grooves 18 and channels 17 are such that substantially the whole pressure drop of a plasma forming gas occurs across the channels 17. The electrode is centred in bore 11 by beryllium oxide sleeve 25 and by annular wedge 28. Gas distributor 16 may be made of beryllium oxide or boron nitride. Nozzle 12 is of copper. The electrode is of copper with a tungsten tip.
