Abstract
1463317 Laminated electric heater S HORIKI 20 Dec 1973 [20 Dec 1972 26 Dec 1972 15 April 1973] 59216/73 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions B2 C1 and H3-H5] A heating element comprises a substrate 11, an electrically conducting layer 12 and an electrically insulating protective layer 13, the conducting layer being made by mixing a glass powder a metal powder and a binder composed of an organic solvent and a polymer, and firing to decompose the binder and to partially oxidize the metal, the metal being present at between 20 and 97% of the conductive layer and selected from copper, silver, gold, zinc, cadmium, aluminium, indium, thallium, tin, lead, antimony and bismuth. The polymer is natural or synthetic and a list of polymers and classes of polymers is given in claim 1. Because oxidation of the metal is desired, no protective atmosphere is provided during firing. The protective layer may be applied after firing in which case it may be a polymer of the same type as selected for the binder in making the conductive layer, or heat resistant plastics such as melamine resins urea resins benzoguanamine resins fluorinated polyethylenes, silicone resins aminoplast resins, polyimide resins, epoxide resins or polydiphenyl ether resins. The protective layer may alternatively be of inorganic materials such as glass, gypsum, ceramics, calcium carbonate, as boards, foamed if required, adhered to the electrically conducting layer. If the protective coating is applied before firing it may consist of glass. The substrate may be an enamelled metal, ceramic, glass, brick, pottery material, gypsum, calcium carbonate calcium silicate or asbestos formed as a sheet, dish tube or cup. Knitted, woven or non-woven inorganic fibres (glass or ceramic) may be used. The glass may have a silica or phosphate or borate basis with alkali metal or alkaline earth metal, e.g. lead or zinc. Firing takes about 1 hour in air at 600-1000‹ C. The conductive layer may be spread on the substrate, silk screen printed or applied by means of a transfer sheet to which the resistor is attached by a water soluble adhesive which is subsequently dissolved away. It may be attached by means of a pressure sensitive or heat sensitive adhesive. The heating conductor may be a single sheet between electrodes 14 (Fig. 2, not shown) or the sheet may be divided, as shown in Fig. 3 into parallel conductive strips 12. A comprehensive list of applications is given. The element may be connected in a circuit as a resistance or heated inductively.
