Abstract
1463233 Lasers STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 13 Feb 1975 6139/75 Heading HlC A c.w. injection laser 8 and a photo-sensitive semi-conductor diode 9 which monitors the laser output radiation are adjacently mounted on a threaded gold-plated copper stud 1 which functions as a heat sink. The laser may be a stripe contact GaAs/GaAlAs double heterostructure and the photosensitive diode either a like semi-conductor structure or a purpose grown GaAs slice, both components being affixed by indium solder to a ledge portion 3 of the stud. Electrical contacts to the laser and diode are effected by terminal leads 4 which extend through a supporting and electrically insulating seal 5. The photosensitive diode is used to monitor the modulated output of the laser, and to effect compensation due to temperature changes and ageing by providing a control signal for the laser drive current in a feedback loop.
