1462684 Determining matter in liquid MEIDENSHA KK 25 Jan 1974 [29 Jan 1973 (2) 5 March 1973 (2) 9 March 1973(3) 26 March 1973] 3674/74 Heading G1N Apparatus for determining the amount of matter in a liquid comprises a housing with inlet and outlet, a sensor in the housing aligned so that flow from inlet to outlet is parallel to the sensing face, the housing being constructed for immersion in the liquid being measured, means for introducing a medium between sensor and outlet to cause fluid-flow from inlet to outlet and means for generating pressure waves in the liquid in the housing to scour adhered matter from the sensor. The flow is preferably at a rate which produces turbulence at the sensor. Provision for flushing the sensor with clean liquid and calibrating for dissolved oxygen using air may also be provided. The sensor may measure pH, dissolved oxygen, redox potential or may be ion selective. It is preferably of the membrane type and intended for use in contaminated water. The medium causing fluid-flow may be introduced as a bubble pump, a liquid pump, or a water jet. Turbulence which helps to keep the sensor clean, is generated by narrowing the fluid path adjacent the sensor. When the liquid is flowing, the housing may be maintained parallel to the flow by a vane. Pressure waves may be generated by compressing a plastics tube in a gas, a liquid flow line to the housing or by reciprocatingly changing the volume of the housing available to the fluid. The sensor may be supplied alternately with contaminated and pure water, numerous arrangements being described. This may be supplemented by subjecting an oxygen sensor to air while adjusting the sensor output to a desired reference to compensate for ageing or contamination. In other embodiments the sensor may be rotated in the liquid with its active surface parallel thereto.
