Abstract
1462635 Wrapping A SINGER 25 Jan 1974 [12 Feb 1973 13 Aug 1973] 03637/74 Heading B8C A machine for wrapping articles A comprises means 22, 26, 30 for displacing the articles A along a feed path having a change of direction, means 36, 40 for forming wrapping material 14, 18 into sleeves around the articles A, and means 34, 38 for guiding the forming means 36, 40 along a path which converges with the feed path before the change of direction, so that the means 36, 40 enter spaces between the advancing articles, e.g. to fuse or glue together the material 14, 18 from respective reels 16, 20. Articles A deposited on a slotted table 68 are fed by pushers 22 on belts 24 on to belts 26 over which the material 18 is trained, the material 18 being drawn off the reel 20 as the articles advance. Platforms 28 on conveyer means 30 pick up the articles A from the belts 26 and convey them into an operating gap between the guiding means 34, 38, the material 14 being fed from the reel 16 by drive means controlled by a dancer roller 46. The means 36, 40, respectively comprising heat sealing bars and anvils, pass between guides 128, 130, and co-operate to fold together and join the material 14, 18, each bar 36 including an exposed heated wire (118), Fig. 3 (not shown), for cutting the material 14, 18 to separate the sleeved articles. The articles are then conveyed along a downwardly sloping path portion, and preferably enter a heat shrink tunnel (not shown). The sealing bars 36 may include three heated wires (118), one of which is exposed for cutting, heating current being picked up from contactor bars (132), Fig. 6 (not shown), within the operating gap by shoes 144, with microswitches (138), (140) switching the current on and off within the range of the bars (132) to prevent arcing. A sub-frame SF bearing the anvils 40 may be upwardly pivotable about a shaft 154 in the event of an incorrectly fed article A becoming jammed, an hydraulic ram arrangement 160 being provided to retain the subframe SF in lifted position until released.
