Abstract

1462467 Laminated pads WEYERHAEUSER CO 23 April 1974 17726/74 Heading B5N [Also in Division A5] An absorbent pad, comprising at least one layer of compressible liquid-absorbent material 3 and one layer of liquid-impervious material 4, has a plurality of spaced-apart, compressionresistant load-bearing members 5 positioned within the absorbent layer 3 such that, when a compressive force is applied to the pad, the load-bearing members will accept a substantial portion of the force thereby allowing the absorbent material to remain in a generally uncompressed state. The load-bearing members 5 are normally produced as air-filled cells projecting from the impervious layer 4 into apertures 7 in the absorbent layer and are preferably the same height as the absorbent layer. The layer 4 may be of polyethylene. The air-filled cells may be replaced by water-filled cells or by a foamed material with a higher resistance to compression than the absorbent material. The body-contacting surface of the absorbent layer 3 and load-bearing members 5 may be covered with a tissue layer 2 which improves the wicking of liquid away from the surface. The pad may be fashioned as a diaper or as a pad for an incontinent person.
