Abstract
1462408 Phase and frequency detectors; digital frequency meters MULLARD Ltd 26 July 1974 33139/74 Headings H3A and H3H Apparatus for detecting the phase and/or frequency difference between the input signals A, B comprises a phase comparator, e.g. bistable 8 which provides an output E whose magnitude depends on the difference and means e.g. 9, 6 for reversing the phase of either one of the input signals if two consecutive similar transitions of one waveform occur without an intervening similar transition of the other. If the two signals are at the same frequency, bistable 8 is set by a positive going transition of one input, and reset by a positive going transition of the other. In this condition two further bi-stables 9, 10 provide "0" levels at their outputs and the two signals A, B are applied to bistable 8 via EXCLUSIVE-OR gates 6, 7 without inversion. If the frequency of signal A is higher than that of signal B, then a second positive transition of signal A will eventually occur before bi-stable 8 has been reset by signal B, and bi-stable 9 will be switched to give a "1" output which causes gate 6 to invert subsequent input pulses at A. This switching repeats each time the phase difference increases by #. Similarly if B is higher the phase of signal B is inverted by 10 and 7. The output E from bi-stable 8 may be fed to a lowpass filter 11 to give an analogue output at 4, or the outputs G, H from bi-stable 9, 10 may be connected to an up/down counter which indicates the frequency difference.
