Abstract

1461928 Knitting PRENIHAN AG 10 July 1974 [12 July 1973 19 Sept 1973 28 Dec 1973] 30526/74 Heading D1K A knitted nether garment has a pant portion 12, Fig. 1, with the wales in the crotch portion extending from one leg or leg opening to the other and a waist opening 18 with elasticated fabric 17 at opposed edges thereof extending wale wise and formed into coursewise folds or puckers 22, Fig. 3. As shown, tights are knitted toe 10 to toe 14 on an eight-feeder circular knitting machine. The toes which may be of a different denier yarn from the legs 11, 13 may be closed on the machine. The legs are knitted by continuous rotation and are shaped continuously or in steps. The pant portion is rotationally or reciprocatorily knitted from a heavier denier yarn and an elastic yarn is fed to some of a limited group of needles to form area 17 which may be slit on the machine at 18 to form bands 19a, 19b. The puckers 22 are formed by holding loops 23 of the elastic yarns over a number of courses e.g. by holding stitches on selected needles, welt instruments or notched sinkers. The puckers may be separated by flat fabric knitted only from textile yarn. Loops of textile yarn may 'be held at the same time as the loops of elastic yarn but will be longer to allow some stretch. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the waist opening may extend course wise as well as wale wise, being formed either during continuous rotary knitting by making a number of needles inoperative and cutting the floats formed or during reciprocatory knitting.
