Abstract
1461669 Lapping R F KNOWLSON 12 Nov 1975 [19 Nov 1974] 49984/74 Heading B3D A lapping apparatus comprises a lap 1 mounted in a reciprocatable holder 2, and means 4 for vibrating the lap with respect to the holder in a direction parallel to the direction of reciprocation of the holder. The lap has a close sliding fit in the holder which may be in the form of a steel trough mounted for reciprocatory motion in a keyway 3. The holder is reciprocated by means, such as a reversible motor, a rotary motor coupled to a crank, or a rack and pinion device, at 50 to 500 strokes per minute, and a vibrator 4 coupled to the lap by a link 5 vibrates the holder at 50 vibrations per second up to ultrasonic speed. The lap may have a flat, cylindrical or arcuate profile and be used for diamond and sapphire needles, diamond shaped tools for thread grinders or carbide tips.
