1460773 Sawing C E SHAW 24 May 1974 23447/74 Heading B5L A pruning or lopping saw having a saw blade 2 with a generally longitudinally extending cutting edge 10 is provided with a saw retaining and blade guiding member 16 pivotally mounted on the blade adjacent, so as to extend generally longitudinally of, said edge so that the blade and guide member are co-operable with each other in the manner of scissor blades, the guiding member being biased by a compression spring 28 towards the blade, and the arrangement being such that in use of the saw the guide member guidingly engages in a kerf pre-cut in a bough on the side remote from the saw and retains the saw on the bough. To prevent saw departure on overstroke, the blade cutting edge and/or the guide member may be curved towards one another, e.g. as shown, the guide member end may be sharply curved towards the blade, preferably at least 45 degrees. The guide member has a flat side parallel and close to the saw blade. The latter is fast (e.g. integral) with a socket 4 receiving, and secured, by a thumb screw 8, to a handle 6. The guide member is pivotable away from the blade, to facilitate placing the blade and guide member about a bough, by means, disposed at the remote end of the handle, acting on the member via a wire 34 and comprising a sliding member or a lever 40 actively pivotable, either towards, or, as shown, away from the handle. In operation, initially the saw is presented to the bough so that the blade is lowermost and a kerf, say “-1/3 bough thickness, is cut; and thereafter the saw is re-presented to the bough with the blade uppermost, and the guide member engaged in said kerf, and the bough sawn through, the pre-cut kerf also serving to avoid the risk of bark tearing.
