Abstract

1460541 Tunnels M BLANK 17 March 1975 [14 March 1975] 10717/75 Heading E1H [Also in Division B7] A transport system for traversing a large expanse of water by complementary transport above and below the water comprises in combination: an overhead railway and means of travel within a series of carriage-like containers which are linked to form a tunnel to extend from one shore to the other along the bed of the expanse of water. An intermediate support point for such a system could be provided by a hotel or dock in mid sea. The containers may rest on a prepared foundation laid in a trench excavated in the sea bed, and be moved into position by wheeled or gliding motion along the foundation. The containers are either permanently linked or automatically detachable from one another, doors being provided at each container end in the latter case.
