Abstract

1460528 Slip casting TOYOTA JIDOSHA KOGYO KK 15 May 1974 21677/74 Heading B5A [Also in Divisions B3 and F1] A hollow ceramic body having a Youngs modulus of 200 to 5000 Kg/mm<SP>2</SP>, a bending strength of 8 to 200 to Kg/cm<SP>2</SP> and a wall thickness less than “ of its internal diameter is made by pouring a slip-like composition into a mould, allowing the composition to cure in the mould, removing it from the mould and heating it to produce a hollow body having the desired characteristics. The mould may be provided with a core made of wood, synthetic resin or plaster and may be vibrated while the slip is being poured. After curing in the mould, the core is removed e.g. by dissolving it using an organic solvent, and the cured composition heated at between 70‹ C. and 200‹ C. for 24 hours and then at between 850‹ C. and 1550‹ C. for between 24 and 48 hours. The slip-like composition is prepared by mixing refractory material with alumina cement or aluminium primary phosphate and water. Suitable refractory materials include clayish chamotte, alumina, sillimonite, mullite, zircon, chromite, magnesia clinker, silicon carbide, fused corundum, fused silica, cyanite, magnesia, chrome, fused spinel, silicon nitride, chrome-magnesia, magnesite-chrome, vermiculite, vermiculite asbestos, baryte, burned diatomaceous earth and pumice stone.
