Abstract

1460114 Paper making apparatus BELOIT CORP 19 March 1974 [27 March 1973] 12157/74 Heading D2A To control the drainage of a fibrous web laid down on a moving porous surface 12 such as a Fourdrinier wire, the fibrous slurry to form the web being supplied from a headbox 11 having upstream and downstream lips 15, 17 defining a slice opening, a plate 26, 29 is provided extending across the slice opening, the plate having a perforate portion 29 and an imperforate portion 26 to block drainage of the web in this region, the plate 26, 29 being adjustable, e.g. by power means 27, in the upstream-downstream direction to control the drainage and thus the position of dry line 30. As shown, the plate 26, 29 is connected to, and movable with, a suction box 23 having compartments 23a-23d connected to a pump 25 and overlying a container 24 for collecting white water. Drainage is thus effected between the upstream edge 26a of the perforate portion 29 and the dry line 30. The dry line is preferably maintained #-5 in., more preferably ¢-3 in., downstream of the lip 17. The upper slice lip 17 and the headbox roof 19 may be adjustable to control the sizes of the slice opening and of the headbox throat.
