Abstract
1458961 Making sintered porous metal bodies W R GRACE & CO 12 Dec 1974 [19 Dec 1973] 53871/74 Heading C7D Sintered porous metal bodies such as filters are made from a shaped composition comprising in weight per cent 2-70 of a polyolefin with a molecular weight # 150,000 and a standard load melt index of zero, 29-95 of a metal powder and 3-70 of a plasticizer the plasticizer being extracted by dissolution and after pre-heating e.g. at 240-700C to at least partly remove the polyolefin the shaped composition is sintered. The metal powder may be steel; the polyolefin may be polyethylene or a copolymer of ethylene with a comonomer of propylene, butene -1 and isobutene; and the plasticizer may be mineral oil, diethylene, triethylene, propylene, dipropylene, trimethylene, tetramethylene or 2, 3-butylene glycol, glycerin, glycerol monoacetate, triethyl phosphate, polyvinyl alcohol or polyvinyl pyrrolidone. The components are mixed together by heating to below the temperature at which the plasticizer or polyolefin decomposes and mixing at 30-200 r.p.m. The mixture is then shaped by moulding or extrusion at 125-175C and after extracting the plasticizer with a solvent and preheating at 240-700C the body in the case of steel powder is sintered at 700-900C.
