Abstract
1458588 Polymer emulsion compositions KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO KK 8 Feb 1974 [8 Feb 1973 (2)] 5856/74 Heading C3P [Also in Division B2] A polymer emulsion composition comprises a mixture of (1) 100 parts by weight (as resin) of an emulsion of polymer particles of particle size 0À05-5 microns and (2) 0À01-5 parts by weight (as resin) of a polymer dispersion or dried polymer obtained therefrom of particle size 1-5 microns, specific gravity of 0À9 to 1À3 and being stable at 80‹ C. wherein the said polymer dispersion is prepared by dispersing (I) 100 parts by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated, polymerizable monomer and (II) 0À01-10 parts by weight of a second monomer which is a cross-linking agent containing at least two ethylenically unsaturated double bonds and is copolymerizable with (I) into the form of particles of size 1-5 microns and then causing said monomers to polymerize in the presence of an initiator. Component (1) may be selected from vinylidene copolymer emulsions and acrylic copolymer emulsions and component (2) made by polymerizing (I) methylmethacrylate or styrene with (II) divinyl benzene or ethylene glycol dimethacrylate. The polymerization may be effected in the presence of 0À1 to 10 parts by weight of a suspending agent, per 100 parts by weight of monomer. Examples describe compositions of an emulsion copolymer of vinylidene chloride/methyl acrylate/itaconic acid with (1) divinyl benzene/methyl methacrylate copolymer and (3) methyl methacrylate/ ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate copolymer; (2) an emulsion copolymer of ethyl acrylate/ styrene/acrylic acid with methyl methacrylate/ ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate copolymer. The compositions may be used for coating (see Division B2).
