Abstract
1458385 Scarfing MESSER GRIESHEIM GmbH 12 Dec 1973 [12 Dec 1972] 57524/73 Heading B3V In a method of flame scarfing an edge 12 of a continuously cast workpiece 14 so as to remove cracks, a flame burner 10 is arranged such that the angle between the longitudinal axis of the burner 10 and a major surface 18 of the workpiece is from 25 to 35 degrees, the angle # between the transverse axis of the burner 10 and the workpiece surface 18 is from 5 to 10 degrees and the angle γ between the longitudinal axis of the burner 10 and the direction of relative movement between the burner 10 and workpiece 14 is from 5 to 15 degrees. A small layer of material may be removed from the workpiece 14 by a first burner to determine whether the workpiece contains any hidden defects, which may then be removed by a second burner arranged downstream of the first. A flame burner may be provided for scarfing each edge 12 of the workpiece 14.
