Abstract

1458341 Oriented copolyetherester film; moulded belts E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 27 March 1975 [28 March 1974] 12975/75 Headings B5A and B5B [Also in Division F2] A film of a copolyetherester comprising recurring long chain ester units and short chain ester units joined head-to-tail by ester linkages, the long chain ester units having the formula and the short chain units having the formula (where G is a divalent radical derived by removal of terminal hydroxy groups from a poly-(alkylene oxide) glycol having a molecular weight of 400-6000 and a carbon : oxygen ratio of 2À0 : 1 to 4À3 : 1; R is a divalent radical derived by removal of carboxylic groups from a dicarboxylic acid of molecular weight not greater than 300 and D is a divalent radical derived by removal of hydroxyl groups from a diol having a molecular weight not greater than 250, provided that the short chain ester units amount to 15-95% by weight of the copolyetherester, is orientated by (A) stretching the elastomer by at least 300% of its original length, (B) bringing the elastomer to 83‹ to 11‹ C below the melting point of the copolyetherester and (C) cooling said elastomer while stretched to a temperature below the temperature of step (B) by at least 56‹ C. The melting point of the copolyester is from 171‹ to 216‹ C. and the heat setting temperature is from 110‹ to 199‹C. The elongation at break for a given slab of copolyetherester is 30-200%. In a preferred copolyetherester R is a 1,4- phenylene group, G is derived from a poly- (tetramethylene oxide) glycol of molecular weight 600-200 and D is derived from 1,4- butanediol. A V-belt is fabricated by extruding the copolyetherester into a mould having a crosssection that is perpendicular to its long axis that is trapezoidal in shape and which is preheated to 149‹ C., cooling the mould to room temperature, stretching the moulded material to 400% its original length, exposing the stretched material while still under tension to hot air at 177‹ C. for 30 mins., and joining two cut ends of the moulded oriented material by fusion at 232- 88‹ C.
