Abstract
1457149 Ladders GRAVITY ALUMINIUM (PTY) Ltd 13 Dec 1974 [19 Dec 1973 7 Oct 1974] 54101/74 Heading E1S In a ladder, each rung 14 comprises a connecting member 14.1 which interconnects the stiles 12, and a tread member 14.2 which is of hollow uniform non-circular cross-section and extends along and surrounds the connecting member 14.1 and provides a tread surface 14.21, the tread member 14.2 abutting at least at one end (preferably at both ends) against a shoulder 12.1 on the adjacent stile 12 to prevent rotation of the tread member about its axis. The ends of the connecting members 14.1, which are cylindrical, extend through apertures 18 in the stiles 12, and the extreme ends are deformed outwardly at 20. The stiles, connecting members, and tread members may all be hollow aluminium extrusions. Two such ladders 10.1, 10.2 may be combined to form an extensible ladder by longitudinally slidable interengagement of flange formations 12.2 on the stiles 12. The tread surface 14.21 is inclined to a plane normal to the length of the stiles, so as to be horizontal when the ladder is inclined in use. A pawl device (not shown) for securing the ladders 10.1, 10.2 in adjusted relative positions is so arranged that the tread surfaces 14.21 of corresponding pairs of rungs are coplanar.
