Abstract
1456865 Surface polymerization PYE Ltd 14 Dec 1973 58060/73 Heading C3P [Also in Division B1] Particulate siliceous material is reacted first with a mineral acid to induce hydroxyl groups on the surface then with an unsaturated silane in a mole ratio of 3 hydroxyl groups to one silicon atom which silane is an alkenyl trialkoxy silane, or an alkenyl trichlorosilane and copolymerizing the reaction product with an unsaturated monomer to obtain a particular product with an unsaturated monomer to obtain a particulate product carrying a polymer bonded to its surface, in which the monomer has the formula R 3 CH = CHR 4 where R 3 and R 4 are hydrogen. C 1 -C 10 alkyl or alkenyl, phenyl optionally substituted with halogen, hydroxyl, or methoxy, amide optionally substituted on the nitrogen or trichlorosilanyl provided that both are not hydrogen and alternatively both are carbonyl or ester, salt or anhydride thereof. The products may be aftertreated to introduce ionexchange or chelate groups into the polymers for use as chromatographic packing. In examples glass particles are acid treated to increase the hydroxyl content, reacted with trichlorovinyl silane or triethoxyvinyl silane and copolymerized with propylene, isobutylene, styrene, maleic anhydride, butadiene or trichlorovinyl silane. Excess halosilane groups are hydrolysed and reacted with dichloropropane; the styrene polymer is cross-linked by further polymerization with divinyl benzene. The styrene polymers are also sulphonated or chloromethylated and aminated.
