1455820 Magnetic holding devices HAWKER SIDDELEY DYNAMICS Ltd 17 Dec 1973 [16 Dec 1972] 52903/72 Heading H1P [Also in Division H2] To retain under, e.g. space conditions liquid contact-metal 4 between fixed outer contact rings 11 and rotating arbor 5-mounted serrated slip rings 3, end seals are formed from ferromagnetic liquid 15 stabilized in place by magnetic fields produced by, e.g. Ba-ferrite permanent magnets 18, 19. The magnetic circuits in the regions between and outside the two slip ring units are completed through the sealing fluid zones via fixed Fe pole rings 17 and rotating ferromagnetic finned rings 16. The complete unit is sealed at its ends by labyrinth seals 21, 22. The electric circuit is taken via connections 10 on the fixed scale and rotating axial leads 6 in the arbor. Suitable contact liquids are Hg, Ga, 80/20 w/w Na-K, 76/24 w/w Ga-In; the sealing liquid may be colloidal ferrite in a fluorcarbon with added dispersing agent; it must be immiscible and non-reactive with the liquid metal: solid contacts may be W, pure Fe or austenitic stainless steel. In non-space application the contact regions may be fed with inert gas.
