Abstract
1455417 Mechanical switches; retractive switches LUCAS ELECTRICAL Ltd 28 Feb 1974 [28 March 1973 8 June 1973] 14797/73 and 27535/73 Headings G4Q Q1D3X and Q4G2 The operating member 21, 15 of a direction indicator switch is movable into its operative positions by pivoting about two parallel, spaced axes 13, 14, and latched in each of its operative positions. Slots 16, 17 in member 15 allow the pivoting. The latching is achieved by pawl 22, pivoted and spring-loaded to its central position on member 15 and lugs 23, 24 upstanding from base 11. When member 15 is pivoted clockwise (about pin 13), pawl 22 engages the edge of lug 24 then experiences inward movement due to member 15 pivoting about pin 13 so that an edge 25a of a recess in the lower side of pawl 22 rides up the side of lug 24 and slides over and engages the edge 24a of lug 24 to hold member 15 in its operated position. Return movement of the steering wheel causes striker 27 on shaft 12 to free pawl 22 so that springs 19 return member 15 back to its central off position. A handle 21 is released when pawl 22 first abuts the side of lug 24 (at which point the contacts are made), springs 19 return member 15 to its central position. The operation is similar if member 15 is pivoted anti-clockwise except that pawl 22 engages lug 23 having surface 23a. Member 15 can be manually released from its latched positions by returning handle 21 to its central position. In a modification, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown) lugs (123, 124), corresponding to lugs 23, 24 in Fig. 1, are depressible against restoring springs to permit manual cancellation even if striker (127) has engaged pawl (122) and is preventing its movement.
