Abstract
1455269 Charging I C engines; pressure exchangers BBC BROWN BOVERI & CO Ltd 27 Nov 1973 [29 Nov 1972] 55041/73 Headings F1B and F1N In a method of reducing harmful emissions from I.C. engines, the combustion air is compressed in a gas-dynamic pressure wave machine, Fig.1, by the engine exhaust gases and primary and secondary exhaust gas recirculation takes place under at least some engine operating conditions. Primary recirculation arises when exhaust gases shown hatched in Fig.5 admitted to the pressure exchanger by inlet 9 do not all leave by outlet 10, some being mixed with the air entering via inlet 11 and leaving by outlet 12. Secondary recirculation is via return duct 24 from the exhaust gas outlet 10 to the air inlet 11, Fig. 5, from the exhaust gas supply duct (32) via return duct (31), Fig. 7 (not shown) or from the exhaust gas supply duct (32) via duct (35) Fig. 8 (not shown). The primary recirculation decreases and secondary recirculation increases as engine speed rises so that the total recirculation is more uniform than the primary recirculation. A cooler 30 is provided for the exhaust gases recirculated via ducts 24 and (31) and a variable throttle 29 may be provided. In Fig. 7 (not shown) the duct (31) opens into a compression pocket (13), which has the effect of precompressing the ingested fresh air.
