Abstract

1455265 Structural joints SKERNE ENG CO Ltd 4 Nov 1974 [9 Aug 1973] 37866/73 Heading F2M Two structural plates, e.g. the web 21 of a sheet-metal beam 14 of a roof truss 10 and a connecting plate 19 secured to an upright 11, are joined by forming one of the plates with at least one bent-up lug, four such lugs 27, 27a, 28, 28a being shown, together with at least one slot, two slots 29, 29a being shown, and providing the other plate with a corresponding hole or holes 30, 30a, 31, 31a to receive the lug or lugs and a slot or slots 32, 32a registering with the slot or slots 29, 29a there being also provided a load plate 33, preferably of thicker gauge metal sheet, formed, e.g. by bending as shown, to provide a rib or ribs 34, 34a adapted to pass through the slot or slots so that vertical loads on the joint are taken by the rib or ribs, the joint being secured by bending the portion of the or each lug projecting through the or each hole over the edge of the load plate. As indicated in Fig. 1, such joints are provided for connecting the beam 14 and a similar beam 15 to connecting plates 19, 20 secured to uprights 11, 12 and also for connecting the adjacent ends of the beams to a connecting plate 17 which is secured to the top of a strut 16 secured via a further connecting plate 18 to a bottom beam 13. The joints between the strut 16 and the connecting plates 13, 17 are similar excepting that the load plate has only one rib cooperating with a single slot in the strut and in each connecting plate, since the vertical loads on these joints is less than those on the joints at the ends of the beams 14, 15. The connecting plates 19, 20 are of L-section, their bases 24 each being bolted, together with a horizontal beam 26, to the top of the corresponding upright 11 or 12.
