Abstract
1455192 Automatic control of relative position PICOT SA 4 Jan 1974 [11 Jan 1973] 00504/74 Heading G3R A system for synchronizing the operation of a plurality of hydraulic or pneumatic rams comprises a servovalve A-D for each ram and an amplifier for each valve to which is supplied a control signal and a signal representative of any undesired difference in the positions of two of the rams. As shown, the positions are detected by potentiometers 4 and. the rams are synchronized in pairs. Thus, the outputs of 4a and 4b (which are of opposite sign) are combined at 5 and the combination compared with a reference voltage from 23 at 6. The reference may be zero or of a value corresponding to a desired offset in the relative positions of A and B. The output of 6 is combined with the control (command) signal for A fed via 10a for amplifier 3a and with the control signal for B fed via 10b for amplifier 3b. The arrangement is such that the valve of the leading ram (in either direction) is partially closed to effect synchronization. Rams C and D are similar synchronized with each other, and in addition B is synchronized with C, the comparator amplifier 18 for this having twice the gain of the others so as not to be over-ridden by their outputs. In an alternative embodiment Figs. 2, 3 (not shown) any number of rams may be synchronized by comparing them in pairs, either in a closed ring or an open chain. In this case the position detectors comprise resistor bridge networks connected across the comparator amplifiers, desired offset being applied by an adjustable resistor in each bridge. The rams may be used in a metal bending machine.
