Abstract
1454894 Loudspeakers; surround sound EMI Ltd 26 Nov 1973 [7 Sept 1972] 41517/72 Addition to 1348643 Headings H4R and H4J A circuit arrangement for producing surround sound from channels L, R includes four loud speakers 1, 2, 3, 4. Loudspeakers 1 and 4 each have a diaphragm with a voice coil 6 and 7 connected respectively to channels R and L. The louspeakers 2 and 3 each have two voice coils on a common former and separate electrical connections so that the ratio of the sound output from each coil is substantially 2À2 : 1. The ratio of the impedence of the coils at 400 Hz is preferably 11 : 5. The lower impedance voice coil 8 of loudspeaker 2 and the higher impedance voice coil 10 of loudspeaker 3 are connected in series to channel L and the lower impedence voice coil 11 of loudspeaker 3 and the higher impedance voice coil 9 of loudspeaker 2 are connected in series to channel R. Coils 8 and 11 are 5 ohm coils while coils 9 and 10 are typically 11 ohm coils giving an impedance ratio of 2À2 : 1. The voice coils of loudspeakers 2 and 3 are formed by winding the higher impedance coil on a former, winding double sided adhesive polyester tape over the coil and then winding the lower impedance coil on the tape. Thermosetting adhesive on the tape is baked to secure the two coils together.
