Abstract

1454305 Methane drainage in mines COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 15 Jan 1975 [25 Jan 1974] 03482/74 Heading E1X A standpipe device for insertion into a borehole in a methane-containing strata to permit of controlled drainage of methane from the strata comprises a tubular portion 1 having a wedge shaped member or a plurality of wedge shaped members 2 secured to its outer surface and tapering longitudinally towards the front end of the device and being arranged in use to wedge the device in the mouth of a bore hole. In the case of a single wedge shaped member the member is conical. Preferably three or more wedge shaped members are spaced around the outer surface of the device and lie parallel to the longitudinal axis of the device. Connecting means 3 can be provided at the rear end of the device to allow of connection thereto of a further member such as a stuffing box 9 provided with means for bleeding off methane drained into such an arrangement.
