1454109 Stabilised medicaments SYNTEX (USA) INC 5 Dec 1973 [8 Dec 1972 8 Nov 1973] 56394/73 Heading A5B Substantially anhydrous medicament compositions comprise a major amount (i.e. more than 50 % by weight of the composition, excluding the medicament) of a dialkylated mono- or polyalkylene glycol e.g. glyme, diglyme, triglyme, tetraglyme, dimethyl ether of triethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol 350, 550 and 750-dimethyl ethers, and a pharmaceutically effective amount of an active medicament or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, the composition being substantially devoid of peroxides and other oxidation products in quantities which interfere with the carrier or stabilizing properties of the composition, and containing up to 5% by weight of water, the dialkylated glycol serving to stabilize the chemical activity of the medicament. The composition may include at least one anti-oxidant for the dialkylated glycol e.g. propyl gallate, vitamin E, butylated hydroxyanisole, and/or butylated hydroxytoluene. The medicament may be an antibiotic such as tetracycline, oxytetracycline, chlorotetracycline, chloramphenicol, gramicidin, candicidin, and nystatin; an anaesthetic such as benzocaine and xylocaine: an analgesic such as aspirin and 2-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)propionic acid, antiinflammatory steroids such as 6α, 9α-difluoro- 11# - hydroxy - 16α, 17α-isopropylidenedioxypregna-1, 4-diene-3, 20-dione, 9α, 11#, 21-trichloro-6α-fluo-16α, 17α-isopropylidenedioxy-pregna-1, 4-diene-3, 20-dione; naturally occuring or synthetic prostaglandins such as PGE 2 and PGF 2 α; palmitic acid diethanolamide, oleic acid diethanolamide, antihistamines; antibaoterials and fungicides. The compositions may be in the form of creams, ointments, oral or vaginal tablets, rectal or vaginal suppositories, encapsulated preparations, bougies and food premixes.
