Abstract
1453660 Wet oxidation of organic matter BARBER-COLMAN CO 25 Sept 1974 [4 Oct 1973] 41693/74 Heading B1X [Also in Division C1] A process for wet oxidation of organic matter in solution or dispersion in a liquid by reaction with oxygen under elevated temperature and pressure, comprises introducing the liquid into a series of reaction zones with 50-90% of the volume of the first zone filled with liquid, leaving 10-50% of the volume as vapour space, subjecting the liquid to a high state of agitation in each zone, and introducing oxygen-containing gas into the liquid in the vicinity of high agitation whereby undissolved oxygen-containing gas is distributed through the liquid as fine droplets while unreacted oxygen-containing gas accummulates in the vapour space for continuous reentrainment with the liquid phase. Suitable temperatures are 400-480F, and pressures of 50- 200 psig may be used. A reactor suitable for carrying out the above process is described in detail. The process may be used with organic waste such as slimes and sludges, such as sewage, propellant and also with photographic film.
