Abstract
1453436 Supply systems for discharge lamps LUCAS ELECTRICAL Ltd 2 Oct 1973 [31 Oct 1972] 50080/72 Heading H2H [Also in Division H3] To protect a blocking oscillator transistor 16 when the fluorescent tube load 22 is disconnected, stored energy is dissipated in resistors 23 and 27 when T16 turns off. The transformer, whose primary 17 is driven by T16, has a secondary 18 driving the fluorescent tube 22, a secondary 19 providing positive feedback, and a low-turns secondary 21 whose voltage in normal operation is insufficient to forward bias diode 29. If the tube 22 is removed, voltages rise and diode 29 conducts to enable transistor power to be dissipated in resistors 27 and 23. If diode 29 and winding 21 were omitted, R23 and R29 would be dimensioned relative to the transistor to still provide protection. A starting resistor 25 is included, and a gain setting resistor (not shown) may be connected between 12 and R23-C29.
