Abstract
1453402 Light guides PIRELLI GENERAL CABLE WORKS Ltd 20 March 1975 [20 March 1974] 12468/74 Heading G2J The core 1-6b of an optical communications cable comprises a plurality of optical fibres 3 laid up around an elongate member 1 having a high tensile strength relative to the fibres and at least one cushioning layer 2, 6b arranged to cushion the fibres against cross-sectional distortion during manufacture and laying of the cable. The cushioning layer may be placed around the fibres, as 6b, and/or around the elongate member 1, as 2, In the embodiment shown; elongate member 1 may be a cord of glass fibres stranded together, a plastics member or a stranded or braided steel wire; layer 2 is plastics e.g resiliently deformable cellular polyethylene or PVC; sleeves 3a are plastics e.g. high density polyethylene; elongate fillers 4 are plastics e,g. polyethylene; belting 5 comprises lapped paper tapes and moisture barrier 6a, 6b comprises an aluminiumpolyethylene laminate 6a with Al inwards and an extruded cellular polyethylene cover 6b. As shown, the cable has only one core 1-6b which is provided with armouring layers 7, 8 of helically laid steel or Al wires covered with a plastics outer sheath 9. In a modification, the cable has a plurality of cores. The moisture barrier 6a, 6b may be omitted from each core and a similar barrier provided to enclose all the cores.
