Abstract

1453365 IC engines-main and auxiliary combustion chambers NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 6 May 1974 [9 May 1973] 19766/74 Heading F1B The invention relates to an I.C. engine of the spark ignition type having a main combustion chamber 18 and an auxiliary combustion chamber 20 in or associated with each cylinder 12, there being main and auxiliary down-draught carburetters 34 and 36 which supply weak and rich air/fuel mixtures through main and auxiliary inlet passages, 48a, 50a and 26, 28 all respectively. The main and auxiliary passages have respective hot spots 52, 54 located below the main and auxiliary carburetters and heattransfer means in association with the hot spots, the auxiliary inlet passage 50a being formed with a well or depression 56 disposed in the region of the hot spot 54. The auxiliary combustion chamber 20 is provided with an inlet valve 32 and the main combustion chamber with an inlet valve 30; the auxiliary chamber communicates with the main chamber through a passage 22. The exhaust gas outlet duct 60 is in contact with the main auxiliary inlet passages 48a, 50a so as to constitute the hot spots 52, 54. In Fig. 3 the main and auxiliary carburetters 34, 36 are disposed oppositely to those in Fig. 1, the well or depression 56 again being formed in the auxiliary inlet passages 50a. In this embodiment, the hot spots 54, 52 are provided by electric heating coils, also by means of the cooling water passage 66 through which hot water is flowing.
